Taking care of our house is a never-ending job. Some of us might’ve thought about converting our household work into a workout routine. It would be like hitting two birds with a single stone. But is it true?

Being physically active helps in reducing weight. But we must also look at the amount of food we eat and the intensity of the task. There should be an emphasis on performing various physical tasks rather than focusing on housework as the primary goal. Let us consider sweeping and running. Although sweeping involves bending, the time taken to complete the task will be extremely less when compared to running or jogging, which is practiced for 30 mins, at least.

However, household workouts like sweeping, loading the washing machine can be considered as a good warm-up for your actual workouts. Let us look at how our housework can be converted into warm-up workouts.

  1. Loading the Washing machine: When you are loading or unloading your washing machine, just twist and move more. This movement will help to strengthen your core.
  2. Sweeping: While sweeping, tuck your stomach and oblique muscles in, keep your back straight and bring the bristles of the broom as far as possible and pull in.
  3. Step it up: Use a stepladder, stairs, or step stool when you need to reach high areas. Try to repeat the same steps 8–10 times. This is a really great exercise for your hamstrings, provided you keep your back straight.
  4. Squats: pick up items on the floor or tables by squatting. Keep your back straight, squat deeply by bending your knees. Hold for 15 seconds before rising up again. A Squat is an exercise that primarily trains the muscles of the thighs, hips, and buttocks. It also works the quadriceps, hamstrings, and strengthens the bones throughout the lower body.

These changes improve your flexibility and may tone your body. But it’s advisable to not rely on household work alone to achieve your fitness goals.
